Why Bollywood Dance is More Than Just a Killer Workout

“Bollywood”, originally named so because it was the Hollywood of Bombay (now Mumbai), is home to the largest film industry in the world! The Bollywood style of film is iconic for its lavish sets, sky-high production value, gorgeous costumes, and of course, stunningly-choreographed dance numbers.

Just like in Hollywood, the first Bollywood films were made at the turn of the 20th century. Early Bollywood dance sequences featured traditional Indian dance forms like Bharata Natyam and Kathak. Over the decades, other Indian folk dance styles and foreign dance styles like Arabic, Latin, and Jazz began to influence choreography, and the Bollywood dance style became a one-of-a-kind cross-cultural fusion.

Now, after over a hundred years of evolution, Bollywood and Hollywood influence each other more than ever before. Major Hollywood studios like Disney and Viacom have set up offices in Mumbai and begun to partner with local industry giants. Meanwhile, Bollywood dance numbers have borrowed some of Hollywood’s stylistic techniques, incorporating costume and location changes into the middle of dance numbers to give them dynamism and allow them to propel the story forward. You’ll also find many hip-hop moves in modern Bollywood dance!
